No. You can jump directly to any topic you want to study. However, if it's been a while since you've taken a math class, working through the lessons in order is recommended because many topics build on earlier skills.
There are timers on the All Skills Practice Tests, but they count up, not down, so there is no time limit. The real GED test counts down. None of the other practice tests have a timer. The purpose of practice is to learn the material, not to race through questions.

No. Many practice tests use randomized question banks, so you'll see different numbers and different versions of problems each time you practice. This helps you develop true understanding instead of memorizing answers.
No. The questions are original and created specifically for this website. However, they are carefully written to reflect the style, reasoning, and level of difficulty commonly found on the GED Mathematical Reasoning test.
Shortcuts can sometimes save time, but they often fail when a problem is presented in a different way. This site focuses on building understanding while also teaching practical strategies that work across many different question types. When you understand the math, you're much more likely to solve unfamiliar problems correctly.
The Study Plan
It is the plan that fits the most common student I support: those who missed at least a couple years of high school, don't remember many basic math facts, and generally lack confidence in math. The plan relies heavily on using the calculator and pushes more non-calculator questions until later. It also introduces Algebra earlier than many traditional sequences. Everything is carefully ordered so that skills build upon one another, making more difficult concepts easier to learn.
It means a high return on the time you invest learning a skill. I find that most students have either never learned these skills or have completely forgotten them. However, they are some of the more accessible skills on the GED, in my opinion. If you invest the time to recognize the question type and learn the underlying skill, they can significantly boost your score.
Scores in that range often indicate gaps in basic math facts — which is okay, you can still pass! You just have to rely on the calculator as much as possible. The Study Plan starts with calculator-based strategies and is designed specifically for students who have gaps in their learning. One of the main strategies is learning to recognize question types and practicing them until mastery. Often, students try to learn too many topics at first but never really master the most calculator-friendly, non-word-problem questions.
You can start wherever makes sense for you. That said, the Study Plan is carefully ordered, and later levels assume the skills from earlier ones. If you're unsure where to begin, Level 1 is worth reviewing even if you think you know it. Many students discover gaps they didn't expect.
Each level is a group of skills, and every skill comes with a full lesson and two built-in practice question banks — instruction and practice together in one place. The guided question banks include support for each specific question. The GED-level banks are best for preparing for test day.
Some skills are deemphasized because my experience shows they can be difficult to master — especially if you don't know your math facts by heart. Spending a lot of time on those topics early can slow you down when there are higher-return skills that are more achievable. Work through Levels 1 and 2 first, then come back to the Level 3 skills to sharpen your score.
It depends on your starting point and how much time you can dedicate each week. Students who work through the Study Plan consistently — even just a few hours a week — typically see meaningful progress within a month. The goal isn't to rush; it's to build the right skills in the right order so your effort isn't wasted.

This website offers over 100 free GED math practice tests covering nearly every topic on the exam. Those questions are then used to build full-length GED practice tests and category-specific practice tests. The question types are broken down into guided practice — near GED-level questions with prompts that help structure your thinking and teach the underlying concepts. Once you're ready, you can move on to the GED-level question banks to prepare for test day. Finally, the site includes a recommended Study Plan that organizes skills in a sequence designed specifically for adult learners returning to math.
I created this site to provide a resource for my students. I've been teaching GED since 2017, and I always wanted a place where students could access dozens of free practice tests for both general review and specific skill areas. I also wanted a good resource for my Spanish-speaking students.

Not necessarily. The GED tests practical mathematical reasoning rather than advanced mathematics. Most questions involve concepts typically taught in middle school or early high school, but they require you to apply those skills in real-world situations. The biggest challenge for many students isn't the difficulty of the math — it's remembering concepts they haven't used in years.
Yes. Most of the GED math test allows you to use an on-screen calculator. However, the first few questions are completed without one. That's why it's still important to develop number sense and basic mental math skills, even if you plan to use a calculator whenever possible.
Very few. The GED provides a formula sheet containing many of the geometry formulas you'll need during the test. Instead of memorizing dozens of formulas, your study time is better spent understanding when to use them and practicing how to apply them correctly. It is useful to know cube formulas, the connection between radius and diameter, how to find the missing value given the mean, the three ways to use the Pythagorean Theorem, and what is missing from the simple interest formula.
Algebra makes up a significant portion of the GED math test, so having at least a basic understanding of algebra is important. The good news is that you don't need to master advanced algebra. Learning how to solve simple equations, interpret expressions, and work with formulas will prepare you for many of the algebra questions you'll encounter. Knowing how to use the answer choices to guide your thinking and plug them into the calculator can be extremely valuable.
There are 46 questions and the test time is 115 minutes. The questions include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, drag-and-drop, dropdown selections, and other technology-enhanced formats.
You need a score of 145 or higher to pass the GED Mathematical Reasoning test. Higher scores may qualify for College Ready or College Ready + Credit recognition.
For many students, the hardest part isn't the calculations — it's understanding what the question is asking. In my experience, many students struggle with word problems, especially those involving inequalities and the quadratic formula, as well as basic math questions involving negative numbers without a calculator.
I strongly recommend taking the GED Ready test on GED.com as soon as possible. From there, you might realize you don't need much extra practice in order to pass. If you score below passing, I recommend following the Study Plan on ipassedmath.com.
Yes! Consistent practice and a well-designed strategy can really help. First, you need to make sure you are using the calculator as much as possible. Second, follow the Study Plan, which starts with Algebra. These questions are often non-word problems and tend to be asked in consistent ways, making them easier to recognize. Following the Study Plan can make a much bigger difference than simply taking practice tests over and over.
Yes, an official online proctored testing option is available in many states. However, I do not recommend taking the Math test online unless you have to or are really good at mental math. They do not allow paper or a whiteboard, so you have to use your mouse or trackpad to work through problems. In addition, there are very strict rules about keeping your face on camera the entire time. If your face moves out of view, your test may be automatically invalidated. To qualify, you must score "Likely to Pass" (green) on the official GED Ready practice test within the past 60 days and have a reliable computer with a webcam.
The cost varies by state, but it averages around $48 per subject test. The total testing time for all four subjects combined is about 7.5 hours.
